How light is the smoke, really?

Very light. It works in offices and closed rooms without the air turning thick. Keep it away from a smoke detector, as you would with any incense.

Do I need charcoal?

No. There is no charcoal and no burner. Light the tip, blow out the flame, and set it in a holder.
